Thanks Mar 14, 2017

Thanks for posting this, I have read some of Jhumpa Lahiri's own novels and had no idea she was a translator too! Going to read this on Kindle

I was not familiar with her or with Starnone, but found the story interesting. I came across an article where Lahiri writes about teaching herself Italian from the New Yorker in 2015, and another more recent article she wrote about translating this book:

Jhumpa Lahiri's memoir In Other Words Mar 29, 2017

I would recommend that anyone interested in translation, writing, or learning a language read Lahiri's memoir In Other Words. She wrote it in Italian and Ann Goldstien translated it (there's a whole chapter explaining why she can't translate her own work). It's a beautiful book, with the original Italian on the left-hand side and the English on the right. A linguist's dream memoir!
