Dutch term

praktijkmoment

Dutch to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Steiner education
I know what the word means and that it can mean different things in different contexts. What I am hoping for is a brainstorming session. Basically lists of (near) synonyms would be great ;)

--------------------------*

'*Praktijkmomenten*:

Donderdagmiddag groep 1.
Vrijdagochtend groep 2.
Vrijdagmiddag groep 3.'

--------------------------*
MY CONTEXT:

Discussion

Barend van Zadelhoff May 4, 2013:
My problem with 'practical application' is that I don't see how you can practically apply something that you aren't even aware of: unconscious /impulsive actions, implicit/implied knowledge and expertise.

He therefore advises teachers to become more aware of their unconscious/impulsive actions, implicit/implied knowledge and expertise BY focusing on the critical analysis of instances of unusual * practical application *, ...

It is from this context that I wrote:

It is AS IF they video-recorded those teachers during their work and then later they are going to watch these videos to find spontaneous, non-standard practical/professional behavior/actions and implied knowledge and skills of these teachers for critical analysis, etc.

Michael Beijer (asker) May 4, 2013:
please have a look at Kitty's answer below where she said:

'Opportunities for practical application of classroom learning / (...) of theory etc.'

that's basically what I mean.

to be honest, however, I think I might have to ask the client to ask the author what she means by 'ongebruikelijke praktijkmomenten' and 'niet-routinematige praktijkmomenten' . . .
Barend van Zadelhoff May 4, 2013:
Let's not introduce a second new problem as long as we are still discussing the first, so let's forget about this small problem, it only distracts.

Could you explain what you mean by 'practical application'.

'practical application' of what?
What are you thinking of?
Michael Beijer (asker) May 4, 2013:
There is also a small problem with the piece: 'kritisch praktijkonderzoek te raadplegen dat vanuit meerdere invalshoeken geanalyseerd wordt'

which could actually mean two different things:

consult critical practical research that is analysed from multiple perspectives

or

to critically consult practical research that is analysed from multiple perspectives

;)
Michael Beijer (asker) May 4, 2013:
here is the rest: Daarom adviseert hij leraren bewuster te worden van hun ondoordachte handelingen, impliciete kennis en vakmanschap door zich te richten op het kritisch analyseren van ongebruikelijke praktijkmomenten, kritisch praktijkonderzoek TE raadplegen dat vanuit meerdere invalshoeken geanalyseerd wordt, schoolpraktijken moedwillig te problematiseren en te herzien, en te onderzoeken waarom die voor sommige leerlingen voordeliger uitpakt dan voor anderen.

=

He therefore advises teachers to become more aware of their unconscious actions, implicit knowledge and expertise by focusing on the critical analysis of instances of unusual or non-routine practical application, consult critical practical research that is analysed from multiple perspectives, actively problematise and revise school practices, and investigate why certain practices work out better for some students than for others.
Barend van Zadelhoff May 4, 2013:
I will try to understand that but tell me first what follows 'application'.
This should be complete at this point because the next individual item is mentioned after the comma.

Let me also mention, now that we are at it, that I think that 'te' is left out in the next item:

..., kritisch praktijkonderzoek raadplegen dat vanuit meerdere invalshoeken geanalyseerd wordt -->

..., kritisch praktijkonderzoek TE raadplegen dat vanuit meerdere invalshoeken geanalyseerd wordt
Michael Beijer (asker) May 4, 2013:
Hi Barend Sorry, yes, I read what you said. Here is what I have so far for the second sentence:

Daarom adviseert hij leraren bewuster te worden van hun ondoordachte handelingen, impliciete kennis en vakmanschap door zich te richten op het kritisch analyseren van ongebruikelijke praktijkmomenten . . .

=

He therefore advises teachers to become more aware of their unconscious actions, implicit knowledge, and expertise by focusing on the critical analysis of instances of unusual or non-routine practical application . . .

Incidentally, I am translating a master's dissertation about ways for teachers in elementary schools to become more aware of the impact that pupils with ASDs (autism spectrum disorders) can have on their class environment.
Barend van Zadelhoff May 4, 2013:
Please read the complete entry and follow the line of thought.

I agree this word 'praktijkmomenten' is unnecessarily affected or artificial, just like the way they perform this 'eurythmy' of theirs. :-)

But 'incidents' may well be just 'incidents' here.

By the way, if it was 'instances', we Dutch people would use the word: 'geval' 'voorbeeld'

A Dutch person would not be likely to use 'incident' when they mean 'geval' or 'voorbeeld'
Michael Beijer (asker) May 4, 2013:
@Barend: Hmm. To be honest I was inclined to interpret the word 'incidenten' as 'instances', rather than 'incidents'. The author isn't the world's greatest writer and, having come to get a feel for her slightly peculiar use of language, I suspect that's what she means.
Barend van Zadelhoff May 4, 2013:
How do you understand "incidenten van niet-routinematige praktijkmomenten"?

'incident' suggests: something that happens that is not planned

--> non-planned, non-standard 'praktijkmomenten'
--> spontaneous, unusual 'praktijkmomenten'

How do you understand this?

Especially where in the next sentence the following occurs:

'ondoordachte handelingen, impliciete kennis en vakmanschap'

'ondoordacht' (or: onoverdacht) - impulsive
impliciete kennis - implied knowledge

Both refer to something that is not planned, to something that occurs without the conscious interference of the teachers.

It is AS IF they video-recorded those teachers during their work and then later they are going to watch these videos to find spontaneous, non-standard practical/professional behavior and implied knowlegde and skills of these teachers for critical analysis.
Michael Beijer (asker) May 4, 2013:
@Kitty: I think you might be right. That would make it something like this:

Kelly (2011) signaleert een noodzaak voor leerkrachten om incidenten van niet- routinematige praktijkmomenten kritisch te analyseren . . .

=

Kelly (2011) identified a need for teachers to critically analyse opportunities for non-routine practical application . . .
Kitty Brussaard May 4, 2013:
Michael Beijer (asker) May 4, 2013:
different contexts Note that these two (laboratory session & practical) would only cover some of the meanings of 'praktijkmoment'. In other instances 'practice session', 'practice drill', 'practice run', 'practice exercise', 'opportunities for practical application (of x)', 'opportunity/ies for practical experience', 'experiential learning opportunity/ies' or 'practice opportunity' would fit better.
freekfluweel May 4, 2013:

"Practicals with the following practice exercises/sessions"

"In je studie worden praktijkmomenten afgewisseld met theoretische verdieping en beschouwing."
http://www.toneelacademie.nl/NL/opleidingen/docentregisseur

"Praktijkmomenten zoals praktische vakken, stages, groepswerken,
intervisiemomenten, buitenlandse stages of studiereizen… spelen een heel belangrijke sociale rol."

Michael Beijer (asker) May 4, 2013:
practicals Thanks Freek,

Yes, if we assume that 'praktijkmoment' is Belgian Dutch for the Dutch 'practicum' (most hits come from Belgian sites), then we might arrive at something like 'laboratory session' or (my favourite) 'practical' (Notebook Nederlandse en Vlaamse onderwijstermen in het Engels).

This is what Oxford Dictionaries Pro has to say about 'practical':

'definition: an examination or lesson in which theories and procedures learned are applied to the actual making or doing of something.

examples of usage:

It is quite intensive, requiring students to attend classes and practicals from 8am to 5pm and continue working on assignments throughout the evening.

Teachers and students have responded positively to a proposal to break up the Leaving Certificate exams into two sittings with some papers, practicals or project work taken earlier in the year.

For the practicals, you might have to taste five vintages of a first - rate Bordeaux and decide which wine was which year.

Academic work comprised 60 per cent practicals and 40 per cent theory.'

freekfluweel May 4, 2013:

Michael Beijer (asker) May 3, 2013:
just thinking out loud . . . practical lesson (praktijkles, praktijkuur)
practice lesson

practical session
practice session

practical work

practical training session (praktijkuur)
practical training period (praktijkperiode)

Proposed translations

4 hrs

practice times

We provide practice times for people who do Reiki and also offer Healing Circles and Clinics where people can receive Reiki for a donation or low fee.

Note from asker:
Although I see that is used here and there, 'practice times', rather reminds me of opening hours at a doctor's surgery, in UK English.

6 hrs

practice drill, practice run, practice exercise

Just a few ideas...

- From the lofty squishiness between my two ears. Seemed rather straight forward.

In some contexts, I might even go with "practice opportunity"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lianne van de Ven : Bryan, no drill, please, in this (Steiner) context.

9 hrs

practice session

That's about the only variant left and would be what I would use.
