They cite two primary conceptual difficulties with family systems thinking for trauma therapy. The first is that the physical, sexual, or emotional abuse of a family member by another family member or outside individual allows for the identification of a responsible party or perpetrator. To place the responsibility anywhere other than on the perpetrator is "unfair and therapeutically inappropriate" (Wynne et al, 1992, p. 14). The second concern is that family members who seek professional assistance for a traumatized individual will experience blame if the therapist quickly turns his or her primary attention to family relationships rather than addressing the relevant concerns of the family.
