English to German Science Science (general)

It may be that having various traits cluster together in the way they do in nineteenth-century Europe is distinctive, but should this particular clustering be the basis for what we deem “modern” to be? This not only encourages us to ignore nineteenth-century European traits that *are important* elsewhere earlier, but it leads us to assume that all European traits of the nineteenth century are necessary to be modern.

Meine bisherige Lösung: Es verleitet nicht nur dazu, europäische Merkmale aus dem 19. Jahrhundert zu ignorieren, die anderswo schon früher *eine wichtige Rolle gespielt haben*, sondern auch dazu anzunehmen, dass alle europäischen Merkmale des 19. Jahrhunderts vorliegen müssen, wenn ein politisches System modern sein soll.

Wird "important" hier im Sinn von "wichtig" gebraucht, oder geht es mehr darum, dass die "traits" deutlich sichtbar auftreten? Geht es also um die "wichtige Rolle" oder um die Deutlichkeit, mit der sich bestimmte Züge manifestieren?
