Expeditionary strike groups are a newer naval organization comprised of several task forces to combine and increase sea, air and land attack abilities. Not all ships in an ESG are expeditionary ships.

Expeditionary forces

Thanks, Yevgeniy.
I'm not sure about the relevance of the link which talks about WWI Forces.
My text is current and talks about two types of US Navy ships: aircraft carriers and expeditionary ships.
So, while it may be called ספינות משלוח, I need to base it on something more relevant than 1917... :-).
BTW, I think חיל הים is more appropriate than צבאיות.

These are ships that make up a task force (expeditionary force) that the US and other countries send to various parts of the world. American ships normally accompany an aircraft carrier.
Note from asker:
Thank you, Doron.
I assume you mean expeditionary (not American) ships normally accompany an aircraft carrier.
Thanks for the interesting link that helped shed light on what these ships are.

הסבר על SSDS

SSDS
Ship's Self Defense System (SSDS) is an integrated weapons system used aboard large U.S. Navy ships, such as Nimitz class supercarriers and various amphibious assault ships, such as LHDs and LSDs. SSDS is an integrated combat direction system (CDS). SSDS follows an open architecture approach and uses existing shipboard radars and weapons systems, integrated under a COTS framework, to provide a cohesive CDS. The first SSDS designs were backfit onto existing U.S. Navy ships.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/aug/23/michael-...

They do not even suggest that the navy's two new aircraft carriers should be scrapped, trimmed or mothballed. It is too late for that. At 65,000 tonnes apiece, they are due to be completed at Rosyth (Brown did grasp constituency employment issues) for at least £4bn, by 2016-ish. The authors do insist that 21st-century "expeditionary" warfare will need versatile surface ships – and that defence is not a discretionary spending item even for impoverished coalitions. Over to you, Liam Fox.

Whilst my military dictionary gives חיל משלוח for "expeditionary force", therefore logic might dictate something like what you suggested above.

I agree that it lacks something intangible.....

If Doron's link is accurate (my own research suggests it is) that an expeditionary ship is an amphibious, multipurpose, multifunction ship then perhaps something along the lines of
might be possible.
Or a variation on this.
