German term
Eine Kontaktierung
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
Surface treatment/electroplating
Context:
"Eine Kontaktierung der Bauteile ist sicherzustellen!"
This it to do with chromic acid anodizing of aluminium/aluminium alloys by dipping in a bath of chromic acid. I'm thinking along the lines of:
"Make sure that the components make contact with the XXX!"
but I'm not 100% certain, what the components being teated need to make contact with.
* Sentence or paragraph where the term occurs: See above
* Document type: Process specification
* Target audience: Engineers
* Country and dialect (source): German
* Country and dialect (target): American English

Make sure that the components are connected to the electric circuit
"Contact" in the sense of "electrical contact". The components are not just dipped into the bath, they also have current running through them, hence "anodizing" - they become the "anodes" (positive electrodes) of the circuit.

Ah!!! Thank you, seems so obvious now, of course! |

: Yes - I seem to remember that if they're touching each other it doesn't work properly (GCSE Chemistry there!)

Nor do I believe that there is a contradiction. The "Kontaktflächen", i.e. the areas where the electrical contacts are connected, must be as small as possible, but as large as necessary. Taking the finger and thumb image again: if the object you are spray-painting is larger, you might need to hold it with your whole hand. The "Kontaktfläche" will be larger, but the area that remains unpainted will obviously also be larger.
