German term

Bespielbarkeit

German to English Art/Literary Music architecture
Speaking of a concert venue:

Die Maßnahme der 60iger Jahre sollte vor allem die Bespielbarkeit des Hauses verbessern, weshalb 1970-71 eine Klimaanlage eingebaut wurde.

There is by the way no further information about what 'die Maßnahme' entailed.

Am I right in thinking that we would speak of 'acoustics' here? Playability clearly is not the way to go!

Discussion

Helen Shiner (asker) Jul 22, 2009:
Thanks everybody that's really useful. I think 'fitness for purpose' or 'suitability for use' is probably the way to go from what you all say.
polyglot45 Jul 22, 2009:
why not fudge a little and say something like improve its standard as a concert venue?
Helen Shiner (asker) Jul 22, 2009:
@ Colin Frankly neither am I, but then I don't know much about acoustics or air conditioning.
Colin Rowe Jul 22, 2009:
Not just visitors Perhaps orchestras, choirs, etc. also tended to avoid this venue.

I am also not quite sure how air conditioning would have improved the acoustics of a concert hall...
Steffen Walter Jul 22, 2009:
Tricky one... ... because "bespielbar/Bespielbarkeit/Bespielung" is also often used in a more general sense (along the lines of "usability", "fitness for (various) use(s)"), for instance in relation to museum buildings. Hence I'm not sure if your example is strictly related to acoustics.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks, everyone for your useful comments. In the end I went with 'suitability for use' since that fitted the context best. So to Cilian the points, as his suggestion was the nearest."

See explanation

Since the "(building) measure" carried out included installing an ac system, it would seem to be referring to factors to improve the musicians comfort when playing.

improve playing conditions

The measures were intended to improve playing conditions for the musicians...

A few examples:

The renovation of De Doelen Concert Hall
The *playing conditions for the musicians should be improved*, bringing back the functionality of the original stage reflectors (see next chapter).

Stage acoustics and rehearsal room acoustics are important in order to develop musicians, orchestras and provide for *good playing conditions*—to the benefit of the listeners—and must be supported by knowledge of performer’s perception in general, and perceived reverberance in particular.

Confidence Level relatively low, as many of the Google hits appear not to be native English!
