Giardia lamblia or Giardiasis

The first is the name of the organism, the latter is the name of the disease caused by the pathogen.

This is most definitely a pathogenic organism. I recommend you use "Giardiasis" if the child was actively ill at the time (more than likely), alternatively you can say "was infected with Giardia lamblia" (or just Giardia).
