I have been searching through the net...sometimes I get "converter" and other times "transformer" for 変換機. Are they one and the same? And, how would these two be used as a pair with regards to explosion-protected machinery? Your help is much appreciated!

transformer/detector
Converter/transformer. If you're talking about electrical energy, "transformer" is the proper term. "A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled wires." (Wikipedia)
検出器 is usually simply "detector"
