Discussion

see my link the link I provided shows the little sjoko-pletter offered.
We will probably drop the glossary entry due to client misuse of pletter.
I would still appreciate a better term than dollops, though, if anyone got anything better! In any case, they do look deeeeeleeeshus!
Per Bergvall Sep 11, 2011:
Is there any chance ... we might resolve this by finding out what the product really is? A confectionary or a bakery item, for instance? It isn't entirely unthinkable that pletter was the wrong term from the start, which makes it easy to get 'lost in translation'...
Dawn Nixon Sep 11, 2011:
Looking at the images I think something along the lines of `chocolate rounds`would be more suitable than dollops. In my opinion dollops doesn`t sound appetizing enough to have on a menu especially if the company/restaurant is a bit more upmarket.

here is a picture that may help us in this argument. Clearly, no pancake, bakery good or dough involved. I think dollops is right on target so far?
Per Bergvall Sep 11, 2011:
So you found the answer - - but I think maybe you forgot what the question was. Dollops look quite delicious, if you like that sort of thing, but any relation to pletter seems far-fetched. If there is chocolate of any colour or taste inside or outside these things, they are not pletter. If they are hard, and break when bent, they are not pletter. If they are much more than about four inches across, they are not pletter. Nor are they pletter if they are triangular, square, hexa- or octagonal. All of which raises the ever-recurring question - was the source term appropriate in the first place?
jeffrey engberg (asker) Sep 11, 2011:
I found the answer... chocolate dollops. made by hand, as opposed to made in a form.

jeffrey engberg (asker) Sep 10, 2011:
handmade versus form-baked maybe handmade as oppossed to "baked in a form"?
It is the chocolate and ice cream department that makes the håndlagde pletter.
that's why I assume they have some kind of chocolote in them. They do not in this case come from the Bakery or confectionery department.
eodd Sep 10, 2011:
I suggested homemade, as this is the expression I am most familiar with and to me suggests an artisanal product. Handmade sounded a bit too much like a literal translation.
Re plette - I think it's best to check with the client whether it's a type of pancake or a type of biscuit that they mean.
Dawn Nixon Sep 10, 2011:
I see that handmade pancakes is used in American English, but it sounds a bit odd in British English to use handmade in this context, so I guess it comes down to audience.
Per Bergvall Sep 10, 2011:
Why homemade? Håndlagde means handmade. Where did homemade come from? Pletter are soft, kind of like pancakes, and any infusion of chocolate chips would be totally alien to the original. Blueberries maybe, but chocolate assuredly not.

Plett = liten, rund kake sirupsplette according to the electronic UIO dictionary.
I couldn't find an English translation of sirupsplette
-I wouldn't use handmade. "home-baked cookies" would be another alternative.
You could also use biscuits, if you find cookies a bit too American, but it seems to be used more and more outside the USA.

Homemade (small) pancakes

I consulted my cookery books for this one and it seems like `pletter`are small pancakes, similar to the size of scotch pancakes, and they can be served with sweet and savoury dishes. Anyway, the link below provides a bit more information with images.
