Swedish term

Radvis blanding

Swedish to English Science Forestry / Wood / Timber
From a text giving instructions on how to establish stands of Douglas fir.

Att plantera douglasgran i blandning med ett annat trädslag kan vara ett bra sätt för att minska risken för att planteringen ska misslyckas då man har två trädslag. Försök har gjorts med radvis blandning av hybridlärk eller vanlig gran.

@ Chris Hello

Exactly, which is why I was not sure about "alternate rows"

I'm going to post an alternative suggested answer

My son the forester says you can have a line mixture (alternate rows of each species) or an intimate mixture (alternating species within each row), the former being more likely.

@ Chris and all Hello

I think it can be alternate rows or alternation within a row.
I did find quite a lot of evidence to support Chris' idea (alternate rows) but in the same document, I also found

"De olika trädslagen planterades radvis där ordningen mellan de olika trädslagen slumpades."

In the above, alternate rows (one row of A, one row of B) cannot be "slumpades" so in this case there must be random alternation within the row itself.

Eller hur?

Alternate rows/trees in rows

Hello

Following on from my own research, a chat with Chris in discussion, and Deane's remark in a neutral response to "mixed stand", here is my suggestion.

Apparently, we cannot distinguish between two possibilities in Swedish without more info and it may be that both possibilities are right at times, depending on the plantation layout.

Mixed stand

I think the correct forestry term in English regarding this is the term "Mixed stand", which is when you mix different species of trees.
Example sentence:

A mixed stand is defined as one in which no single species comprises more than 80 percent of the stocking

Peer comment(s):

neutral Deane Goltermann : Your explanation seems correct, but I'd say doesn't apply to this Swe term. 'Mixed', fits with my hardcopy dictionary, as does 'rows'. "Mixed by rows" is more likely.
