Discussion

Thomas Johansson Jan 23, 2010:
(Sami/Lapp) birch bark hut I would refer to these sorts of constructions as "huts" (cf Google images for "kåtor").

Also, there seems to be different types of "kåtor": some made of "torv", others of "näver", still others covered by furs. So the "birch bark" qualification seems appropriate.

And possibly add a "Lapp" or "Sami" qualification if ethnicity is relevant in the context. (Näverkåtor can be built by anyone, not only by the Sami or Lapp peoples.)

Lapp cot

This seems to be the expression used in English to describe the traditional Saami dwelling made of birch bark.
Example sentence:

We gather inside a Lapp cot and discuss the changing conditions for the reindeer keeping in northern Sweden now and in the future

Visitors can gain a unique insight to the livelihoods of these people by visiting them in a Lapp cot – their traditional home – sleeping on a reindeer rug and feeding their reindeers
