From Europe to the US Sep 25, 2010

US customers pay by check, occassionally by bank transfer. Both are free at my bank.

My European customers pay using Paypal or bank transfer.
Paypal accepts euros in my account, and converts them free of charge.
Yes, there is a fee for my acceptance of payment; however it is far less than the $35 I am charged for bank transfers in euros.

I bank at a credit union, which is like a bank, but subject to far more stringent regulations and is almost always run as a non-profit, meaning that they aren't out to screw every penny out of the customers, that is, the people with accounts there.
They have a fantastic program for children, who are grandfathered in by their parents (credit unions are open to only certain groups, either business, location, etc). It fosters savings and budgeting in programs designed for teenagers.
The mortgage dept is fantastic, with rates designed to keep homeowners in their houses.
The credit card does not have nasty fees, and they are not interested in bringing down the financial markets.

I take the fees against my taxes as a business expense. It's worth it for all of the other things I get from my bank.

Do you accept the payments in Euro and then convert? PayPal gives you the option when receiving, of leaving in Euro or converting immediately...I find the exchange rate pretty miserable though!

I know you can have various accounts with different currencies, but I don't know how it works?

PayPal Sep 25, 2010

I've been using it for years, never had a problem, and am happy to pay for the convenience of using it, bother for receiving payments and making purchases.

Paypal hides the fees Sep 25, 2010

Well, not quite Rebecca - Paypal simply hides the fees in the conversion rate used which is lower than the official one (e.g. as compared to xe.com), so customers tend to believe there were no extra conversion fee (not least because you only find this explained in the small print).
Together with the fees for receiving payments, the charges by Paypal are quite high, especially for larger amounts, even compared to normal bank charges for international (non-EU) bank transfers. See https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside

PayPal for any SMALL (less than 100 USD) amount Sep 25, 2010

PayPal is so expensive it is ridiculous. I will only accept it for very small jobs, for clients who I don't work for regularly. A 50 dollar deposit here and there is fine, and turns out being spending money for other minor expenses such as proz.com membership or whatever...

Even small amounts, I prefer to let them add up to big amounts, and then take a wire transfer.

My bank doesn't charge me anything for incoming or outgoing international wire transfers (thanks www.skandiabanken.no), so it's always the best alternative.

Slightly off topic - Amazon Sep 25, 2010

As far as I know, Amazon.com does not accept PayPal. Have you been able to buy stuff on Amazon using PayPal?
If so, let me know how.
Thanks!

PayPal - I guess I'm too naive Sep 26, 2010

I thought the fees were a necessary evil. Bank transfers are even more expensive for me.

I have tried incorporating the fees in my bill. Some clients accept; others raise a fuss.
