Hello fellow translators who happen to know Norway and Sweden!
We are planning a trip to Norway and Sweden by caravan for this summer and we are going to visit Oslo, Bergen, Alesund and Trondheim first and then Kiruna-Sweden. But because we do not know the roads in Norway after Trondheim -if they are narrow for a caravan, sinuous, uphill- and, on the other hand, we do not want to miss the view to the fjords after Trondheim, we do not know what to do: go eastwards to Sweden after Tro... We are planning a trip to Norway and Sweden by caravan for this summer and we are going to visit Oslo, Bergen, Alesund and Trondheim first and then Kiruna-Sweden. But because we do not know the roads in Norway after Trondheim -if they are narrow for a caravan, sinuous, uphill- and, on the other hand, we do not want to miss the view to the fjords after Trondheim, we do not know what to do: go eastwards to Sweden after Trondheim and then to Kiruna or travel up to Narvik and then down to Kiruna? What would you suggest?
Any other suggestions are also welcome, needless to say. A meeting for coffee?
I am sorry for bringing up holidays in mid March -and some of you will probably see the post on Monday ("I don't like Mondays")- but we've had summery weather here in Greece for some time now -very distracting- and it was an appealing way to spend a Sunday while in T-shirts and basking in the sun.

In 2006, Our route was: Malmö, Växjö, Vimmerby, Linköbing, Stockholm, Mora, Östersund, Umeå, Luleå, Jokkmokk, Kiruna, Narvik, Rana, Trondheim, Oppdal, Otta, Lom, Sogndal, Voss, Geilo, Gol, Gjøvik, Hamar, Kokngsvinger, Arvika, Troillhättan, Göteborg, Malmö. Last year we went to the southeast of Sweden, e.g. Öland.

I would suggest traveling up to Narvik and then down to Kiruna. In my opinion this is the most scenic and interesting route.

I do not live on the coast, and I am not very fond of driving.
Maybe that disqualifies me at the outset - but for seeing the Norwegian coastline, there is nothing to beat "Highway no 1":

Mats, thanks for the invitation. We haven't decided yet which route to follow after Kiruna, most probably we will go to Finland to see the lakes. But if we decide to go down to Stockholm I will contact you. I read your article on Kudoz, very interesting. I rarely participate for lack of time but also because people sometimes get a bit aggressive and impolite, which I hate. But this is another issue.

Narvik - Kiruna, as Michele said, is the best route.
But be careful: we crossed the mountains once with a huge car and it might be quite tiresome with a caravan. If you have some time (well, quite a few days) to spare I really suggest you reach Tromsø, then go inland and cross Norway through Finnmark, then drop back to Karasjok in Finland and from Karasjok to Kiruna. Basically this way you will visit Finland first and then Sweden.

It's easier because the roads are pretty much plain, the scenery is amazing, you get to see some fantastic lakes (Inari above all) and still be on your way from Kiruna down to proper Sweden.
If you need some extra advice do not hesitate. If you're not used to winding streets and sometimes harsh weather, Narvik-Kiruna can be quite a pain. ▲ Collapse

Thanks Balestrieri for your answer,
We were planning to go from Oslo to Narvik and then Kiruna and from there to Finland all the way down to Turku and then crossing the channel to Stockholm. We want to go to Kiruna for sentimental reasons, skip Sweden from Kiruna to Uppsala and go to Finland instead. If we follow your advice we will be zig-zagging. Is it really that bad even in the summer?
