BUSTLE
Xavi Carbonell pinta en Alcoi los recuerdos de cada vivencia en Nueva York, en especial el ambiente artístico en el que se sumerge y que conoce muy bien tras una década de viajes, con sus desencuentros y sus oportunidades. La producción que realiza en su estudio de Batoi no se muestra en ningún otro contexto, está destinada a formar parte del mercado norteamericano en exposiciones y ferias. Son en principio obras sin retorno creadas por el artista que es el único con billete de ida y vuelta en esta aventura. El poder reunir en la Casa Bardin este trabajo inédito, que de momento no marchará a EEUU, es motivo de orgullo para los que lo hemos hecho posible y una ocasión única para los que se acerquen a disfrutarlo.
Aproximarnos a su obra es como el resultado de una búsqueda en Google Maps de los barrios más bohemios de esta cosmopolita ciudad: Soho, Tribeca, East Village, Chinatown. Y con el zoom nos adentramos a una calle concurrida, a una fiesta en un loft, a un bullicio, bustle en inglés, que da título a esta exposición. En ella invita al observador a explorar sus vivencias en Manhattan y a verlas a través de sus ojos. Estas impresiones ayudan a comprender su íntima realidad personal y a entender como se adecua Carbonell a ese entorno. Cada obra es como una celebración psicodélica, con tonos fluorescentes que despiertan los sentidos, como las chuches ácidas en el paladar. Estampas positivas que le inyectan energía para afrontar el reto de seguir pintando lo que más ama desde la distancia.
En las obras que componen esta muestra está latente lo más significativo de los principales autores del expresionismo abstracto estadounidense y español como Pollock o Saura, al que contempló bien de cerca y durante largo tiempo en una exposición y le dio la motivación para comenzar a dibujar con sentido artístico en cuadernos hace ya más de dos décadas. Toma lo más característico de cada artista y comparte con ellos la necesidad de expresarse a través del acto inmediato y espontáneo de pintar. Su estilo resulta extraordinariamente vital. En sus lienzos, contrasta la expresividad desenfadada con el exquisito sentido del color de su brillante paleta. “Pinto a las gentes de Nueva York, pero sin el color gris”, comenta Xavi. La habilidad con la que maneja la distribución de los colores contribuye al equilibrio y a la precisión compositiva en cada cuadro. En esta serie concentra la acción en el centro, expandiendo el vacío que produce el blanco alrededor, por lo que da la sensación de una auténtica aglomeración. El hecho de que la obra respire al reservar los márgenes al fondo blanco, hace que la composición con esos vacíos se modere entre el pulso del azar pictórico y la simplicidad de la tela o el papel, entre el bullicio y el silencio.
El gran formato de sus creaciones, tan del gusto del cliente americano, reafirma la presencia de la obra como objeto. Lo esencial de cada una está en lo que no se ve pero se intuye, en el proceso creativo, en el acto de manchar tan ligado al resultado final de sus pinturas. Carbonell se posiciona sobre el lienzo, lo rodea, baila y va dispensando el óleo en una acción directa sobre el soporte en el que acaba imbuido. Materia y acción crean la obra.
Y una vez que te acostumbras a sus chorreos de pintura que al mismo tiempo son color y viceversa y que van tejiendo una cartografía, una red de líneas irregulares de carga pictórica que desde la distancia cada vez son más abstracción, entonces, brotan sus personajes que encarnan a las gentes más variopintas y de diferentes nacionalidades que allí ha conocido. Las representa con grandes ojos o gafas y tensos filamentos por cabello, hechos a rotulador o a lápiz que nos muestran la personalidad del artista y la admiración que siente por el arte infantil. Y bien sabe Xavi, como ha experimentado, que nadie dijo que fuera fácil dibujar como un niño, él sigue practicando y anhelando poder regresar a esa mente inocente que simplifica en el papel las ideas, las vivencias, los miedos y los sueños que revoletean en la cabeza. Esta iconografía personal, llena de frescura y de sentido del humor, pasa de esa influencia del papel garabateado por un niño a evocar a los grafitis sígnicos de Basquiat que unían las visiones de las gentes en las calles o los dibujos aparentemente fáciles de CY Twombly que contenían referencias históricas, sensuales y misteriosas.
La figura humana es una simbología constante en su carrera. En otras series anteriores creaba grandes manchas que ocupaban prácticamente la totalidad del lienzo, como en Stories for children que eran creaciones para niños y poco a poco ha ido sintetizando y creando como un niño para los mayores. Sus personajes son muñecotes con alma, creados con esa técnica aprendida de los garabatos infantiles y en otras ocasiones surgen de las formas que le sugiere el goteo del óleo. Y es que, ¿qué niño no ha imaginado cosas en las formas de las nubes? Y así son las pinturas de Xavi Carbonell, siempre descubres algo nuevo cada vez que las miras.

Xavi Carbonell paints in Alcoi the memories of his life lessons in New York, particularly the artistic atmosphere in which he submerges himself and knows very well after a decade of trips, with is disagreements and opportunities. The production that is being done in his studio in Batoi won't be shown in any other context, and is destined to form part of the American market in exhibition and fairs. They are, from the beginning, one-way pieces of artwork created by the artist, who is the only one with a return ticket in this adventure. Being able to gather this unknown art work in the Bardin House, which for the moment will not go to the USA, is a reason to be proud for those of us who have made this possible as a special occasion for those who come and enjoy it.
Getting close to his art work is like the result of a Google Maps search of the most Bohemian neighborhoods in this cosmopolitan city: Soho, Tribeca, East Village, Chinatown. With the zoom, we get closer to a busy street, a party in a loft, a bustle, for which this exhibition is named. The exhibition invites the observer to explore the artist's life lessons in Manhattan and to see them through his eyes. These impressions help to understand his intimate personal reality and to understand how he himself, Xavi Carbonell, adapted to his surroundings. Each piece of art work is like a psychedelic celebration, with fluorescent tones that awaken all the senses, like acidic candies on your palate. Positive stamps that inject energy to face the challenge of continuing to paint that which he most loves from a distance.
In the art works that make up this exhibition, the most meaningful aspects are latent of the main authors of American and Spanish abstract expressionism, such as Pollock or Saura, who were contemplated very closely and for a long time in an exhibition by the painter himself, after which served as personal motivation to start painting in an artistic sense in sketchbooks more than 20 years ago. He takes the most characteristic of each artist and shares with them the need to express oneself through the immediate and spontaneous act of painting. The resulting style is extraordinarily lively. On his canvasses, he contrasts his free-and-easy expressivity with the exquisite sense of color on his vibrant palate. “I paint the people of New York, but without the color gray,” comments Xavi. The ability with which he manages distribution of colors contributes to the balance and comparative precision in each painting. In this series, the action is concentrated in the center, expanding to the emptiness produced by a white background, consequently creating a sensation of real congestion. The fact that the art breathes, due to the margins on a white background, makes the composition of these empty spaces temper between the random pictorial pulse and the simplicity of the canvasses, between the bustle and the silence.
The large format of his creations, so liked by American clients, reaffirms the presence of the art work as an object. The essential in each piece is not in what you see but instead in what you intuit, in the creative process, in the act of each bounding stroke to the finally resulting paintings. Carbonell positions himself in front of the canvas, he surrounds it, dances, and releases his oils in direct action on the support in which it ends up imbued. Substance and action create art work.
Once you get used to his spurts of paint, which at the same time are color and viceversa, and weave a cartography, a network of irregular lines that carry a pictorial load that from a distance become more of an abstract, then and only then, his characters, who incarnate the most diverse and multi-national people the artist met there, bud. He depicts them with large eyes or glasses and tense filaments for hair, done in marker o pencil that shows us the personality of the artist and the admiration he feels for infantile art. And Xavi knows well, as he has experienced, that no one ever said that painting like a child was easy. He continues to try and yearn to return to that mind, so innocent, which is simplified on the canvas, the ideas, the life experiences, the fears and the dreams that swirl around in the head. This personal iconography, full of spontaneity and sense of humor, have that influence of paper scribbled on by a child, evoking those signet graffitis by Basquiat which united visions of people in the streets or the apparently easy drawings of CY Twombly which contained historical, sensual, and mysterious references.
The human figure is a constant symbology in his artistic career. In other previous series he created large patches that practically occupied the whole canvas, like in Stories for Children , which was created for children and little by little started to synthesize and be created like a child for adults. His characters are little dolls with souls, created with that technique learned from children's scribble and, on other occasions, they come from what is suggested by the drops of paints. The question is, which child has never imagined things in the shapes of the clouds. That is how the Xavi Carbonell's paintings are, you always discover something new every time you look at them.
