Same house Jul 3, 2008

My workplace is in the same house, different room with a separate entrance and kept locked when I am not there. Now and then I have changed houses, a distance of 1,200 miles, but I just take the computer and set up in the other house.

And if Diana thinks driving 100 miles is a long way to an interpreting assignment, I have driven as far as 400 miles (one way). Distances are long and airports few in this part of the world! But that does not happen too often.

Judging from the results of this poll, as a profession we should win a prize for being one of the greenest occupations in the world because an overwhelming majority of us do not have to commute to work.

With the high cost of diesel fuel, I can let my monster truck just sit there as long as I give up my road trips, but that's a tough one because I love them so much!

I picked "other" Jul 3, 2008

My workplace IS my bed! lol

I like to sit on my bed with my Mac laptop, even though I have a desk/table...it's much more comfortable.
As you probably have guessed, I live in a studio apartment.

When I lived in Rio de Janeiro, I had a nice two-bedroom apartment and used one of the bedrooms as an office. That's when I had a regular PC and had to sit at a desk!

More than one workplace Jul 3, 2008

Hello everone!

I have chosen "other" because I have more than 12 workplaces

The main one is near my bed (less than one meter, I think), but I work in my boyfriend's home, too and sometimes in other places such as the living room, the kitchen or even the bed. It depends on the day.

Nice poll.

Beatriz

Two doors down from my bedroom Jul 3, 2008

Interesting question (for change, after few boring ones)!

Since I no more offer interpreting service I do not have to travel.
However, when I was with telephone interpreting outfit, I did not have to travel.
Once in a while I did the task in my bed with pajamas on!

Either way, zero commuting.
Isn't that wonderful especially in this age of high fuel price!

Nice poll.

Beatriz

I don't really have 12 workplaces, but 4: one is my office room in my house (across bedroom) where I do the translations (and my homeworks...), although I like sitting in the kitchen near the coffee machine and the ashtray...
The other 3 are different schools where I give tuition in maths to children.

nice poll
have a nice evening

At the "old" house my workspace is a few steps away from the bed, a real problem when I work nights. I wanted to move my 'office' to the living room, but it turned out that WiFi doesn't work there, so I'm still stuck in the bedroom.

Oh! half of a step from my bed! Jul 4, 2008

My desk is just around the bed, that´s the main station. When my girls are around I use to travel around the house with my lap, so it is not extrange to find me working in their room, in the living room, standing in the kitchen (while making dinner) or in the backyard. I love it!

17 steps up Jul 4, 2008

in winter...
All through summer, when the days are long and the sun sets late, I sleep in my office where the light is ideal to read in bed.

So, after starting the computer with a sleepy head, I just need to push the Windows / Start button and a g (geheugen, Dutch for memory) to start the Trados Workbench, and named button and a s (schrijven, Dutch for writing) to start Microsoft Word, and so on: Start + e (elektronische post = Windows Mail), Start + j (jukebox = Windows Media player), Start + w (wereldwijd web = Internet Explorer). Then all attention is nedded for coffee machine and central heating dial.
Good morning!

I have a broadband connection in my home, a mobile connection for changing whereabouts, and in my summerhouse, I also have a broadband connection (pending reliable mobile connection). So the work is always around me.

Good or bad ??? The fact that you are not tied down to one place does compensate for the freelance, independant, single translator's situation. The art, however is to be able to say 'enough is enough', and let go some times.

Aren't we a lucky profession !

Smiles all around !

At home Jul 4, 2008

I work twenty steps away from my bedroom, but sometimes I also work in the living room (twenty steps too:)) just to change a little my daily routine.
Regards,
Fernando
