Source text - Spanish En este país se cuenta con una matriz energética para la producción de electricidad que privilegia las fuentes renovables: más del 90 % de la generación eléctrica se obtiene a partir de energía hidroeléctrica, geotérmica y eólica. Sin embargo, por diversos motivos, se está llegando a un límite en la capacidad de desarrollo de nuevos proyectos de generación a partir de las fuentes energéticas que de forma convencional se han aprovechado en el país. Por lo anterior, se corre el riesgo de tener que incorporar una mayor cantidad de fuentes energéticas fósiles importadas, afectando la autonomía energética del país y desmejorando los niveles de sostenibilidad ambiental del sistema eléctrico nacional.
Por estos motivos, se ha determinado la necesidad de desarrollar estudios de tecnologías que hagan viable la utilización de fuentes energéticas renovables no convencionales, como es el caso de la energía solar y la eólica, las cuales son ampliamente disponibles en el territorio nacional.
Una de las tecnologías que más podría aportar a una mayor incorporación de fuentes alternativas no convencionales de energía en la matriz de generación de electricidad es el almacenamiento energético mediante bombeo hidráulico. Ya se cuenta en el país con estudios de identificación de posibles proyectos de bombeo; sin embargo, no se tiene el conocimiento necesario para valorar la viabilidad técnica y económica de desarrollar este tipo de proyectos, ni para determinar cuáles son los servicios más adecuados que estas plantas podrían entregar al sistema eléctrico nacional.
Por lo tanto, hay que desarrollar capacidades internas para la realización de estudios de factibilidad técnica y económica de plantas de almacenamiento energético durante horas de baja demanda mediante plantas de turbobombeo hidráulico.
Translation - English In this country, we have an energy mix that favors renewable sources of energy: more than 90% of the electricity we generate comes from hydroelectric, geothermal, and wind energy. For various reasons, however, we are reaching a limit in our capacity to develop new energy generation projects that use the energy sources we have traditionally used here. As a result, we are at risk of having to incorporate a larger quantity of imported, fossil fuel-based energy sources, which negatively impacts the energy independence of our country and degrades our national electrical system's environmental sustainability levels.
For these reasons, we have found it necessary to conduct research into technologies that make the use of renewable energy sources viable, such as solar and wind energy, both of which are readily available within our borders.
One of the technologies that could contribute the most to the incorporation of more renewable energy sources into our electricity mix is the use of Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH). In this country, we already have studies identifying possible PSH projects; however, we lack the knowledge required to assess the technical and economic viability of developing these types of projects, and to determine what role it would be most appropriate for these facilities to play within our national electrical system.
Therefore, it is necessary to develop our domestic capacity to carry out technical and economic feasibility studies for facilities that store energy during times of low energy demand by means of hydraulic pumping (i.e. PSH facilities).
