Translation - English In November 2014, this diplomatic transport initiative took on a new dimension when Beijing signed a construction contract with Nigeria for a 1402 km railway that would link the coastal cities of Lagos (south west) and Calabar (East). According to the Xinhua agency, this is the largest foreign construction contract in the history of China. The route will cost 11.97 billion US Dollars and will consist of 22 stations and a train capable of reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h. The railway will create 200,000 local jobs, directly or indirectly and 30,000 full time positions once it becomes operational.
Many projects like these are in the works as we speak. Chinese companies have built 430 km of railway lines in Gabon and Chinese trains have also been announced in North Africa specifically in Egypt. On April 13, 2015, a China Railway Construction Corporation affiliate was awarded a 600 million dollar contract to build two railway lines that would connect ElSalam City to Bilbeis City and Sharqeya.
