Discussion
• If possible, arrange for employees to work from home or work flex hours to avoid crowding at the workplace.
• Avoid public transport: walk, cycle, drive a car or go early or late to avoid rush hour crowding at the workplace.
• Bring lunch or provide pre-packaged meals and eat at desk or away from others (avoid the cafeteria and crowded restaurants). Introduce staggered lunchtimes so numbers of people in the lunch room are reduced.
• Do not congregate in snack rooms or other areas where people socialize. Do what needs to be done and then leave the area.
• If a face to face meeting with people is unavoidable, minimize the meeting time, choose a large meeting room and sit at least one meter (~3 feet) away from another. If possible, avoid shaking hands, kissing, or hugging.
• Set up systems where clients / customers can pre-order / request information via phone / email / fax and have order / information ready for fast pick up or delivery.
• Encourage staff to avoid non-essential activities where they might come into close contact with infectious people.
• Identify common congregation areas, their purpose and whether alternatives exist to reduce contact between individuals. Examples of areas would include entrance and exits, cafeterias, water coolers, copier rooms, telephone areas, lounges etc. Examples of alternatives would be availability of alternate entrances/exits, ability to decentralize phone or copier areas etc. to multiple locations.
• Consider closing or limiting access to non essential congregation areas. This may include closing cafeterias, lounges, or posting no congregating notices in certain areas.
Social distancing is a strategy to reduce the risk of contracting infection by limiting the frequency of contact between people.
• Where operationally allowed, groups of employees should be dispersed either within the facility or to different work locations to avoid close contact.
• Shift changes should be managed as follows: when one shift goes off duty, there should be an interval before the next shift begins so that the worksite can be thoroughly ventilated (either opening doors and windows or turning on air conditioning system).
• Avoid meeting people face to face – use the telephone, video conferencing, and the Internet to conduct business as much as possible – even when participants are in the same building.
