My Name is Veronica Medina-Ross and I come from Mexico. Since 1998 I have been developing a PhD research project within the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE), at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia.
I have been working under the supervision of Prof. Tim O'Riordan and Dr. Jonathan Barton. The title of my research project is: "The Environmental Management in the Mexican Chemical Sector: Obstacles and Opportunities". The project focuses on the evaluation of the types of voluntary environmental management initiatives adopted and implemented by the chemical sector in Mexico. It also studies the factors motivating or on the other hand, hindering the adoption and implementation of such initiatives. This investigation adopted a qualitative approach using interviews, participatory observation, and documentary analysis as main research methods. Currently, I am at the last phase of the Thesis writing up and I hope to submit it by July, 2002.
My academic background is very inter-disciplinary, my first degree is a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Pharmaceutical-Biology (BSc.) obtained at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). After completing this degree I taught chemistry at a secondary school in Mexico City. I first got involved in environmental issues when I developed and implemented an Environmental Education Programme in the same school. Then from 1994 to 1995 I continued with my academic studies and came over for the first time to England, to carry out a taught Master course (MSc.) in Integrated Environmental Studies at Southampton University.
