Spanish to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) brand valuation
I am having difficulty assessing which instance of "por" indicates the element of substitution at work in this sentence.

The context is a study comparing various brand valuation models.

Any inklings heartily appreciated. Many thanks.

En este método, el flujo de caja libre atribuible a la marca es similar al EVA, pero se sustituye el flujo atribuible a una empresa con producto genérico por los activos utilizados por la empresa con marca por la rentabilidad exigida a los mismos.

It seems that cash flow attributable to the generic product company is substituted by assets used by the branded product company – but how to work in those assets’ required yield?

This is a case of awful drafting in Spanish. The first "por" is the substituting one. Instead of "utilizados por la empresa" read "que la empresa con marca utiliza" and instead of "por la rentabilidad", read "debido a la rentabilidad". Helped?

Hi Iqcservices! What do you mean by "due to st*idi* there are only 2 words here"??, and regarding "on account of" (proposed by Simon) which basically means the same, what do you mean by "on account of *** there are 3 words here, meaning nothing in this pa

Does "times" make any sense?

er... begging your pardon

I read it differently. The free cash flow that may be attributed to the brand is similar to the added economic value (from generic products), but the cash flow that may be attributed to a company dealing in generic products is substituted by the active ingredients used by the brand company due to the margins it requires from the products.

I can't be sure of this, you're the one holding the text, but something tells me you may be overlooking another possibility for "activos".

agree Olga María Piaggio : I agree with you Parrot... "por" refers back to Sustituye. One thing is being replaced "with" or substituted "by" another. That's the meaning I get.

It would really make sense if "activos" means "principios activos".

basically, they are multiplying their assets by the required yield and come up with a figure IMHO

This is how I would translate the above:

By this method, the cash low attributable the brand(name) is similar to the EVA, but it is being substituted by a (cash)flow attributable to a company with generic products by the assets used by a company with brand name due to the expected (demanded)profitability

I hope this helps....

Correction:
By this method, the cash flow attributable to the brand (name) is similar to the EVA, but it is substituted by a (cash)flow attributable to a company with generic products by the assets used by a company with brand name due to the expected (demanded) profitability

I made a correction because it is cold here, and my fingers missed a couple of letters, sorry for that
