Gelbstreifenbarbe(n)

German to English Science Zoology Type of fish
Context:
"Ein Schwarm Gelbstreifenbarben"

This is a picture caption from an article about someone who goes diving for a hobby. The location is most likely the Red Sea.

Discussion

Lancashireman (asker) Jun 17, 2008:
Thanks to all, particularly to Nicole for the nod in the direction of ‘goatfish’. Sarah’s Wikipedia link showed both ‘yellowfin’ and ‘yellowstripe’. Very convincing indeed. To match the form of the German source term more closely (Gelbstreifen-), I have opted for ‘yellow-striped goatfish’, i.e. past participle form plus hyphen.
John Dale D.D. Jun 17, 2008:
Sorry Andrew ignore my answer, it is rubbish, I was thinking freshwater not seawater
Nicole Schnell Jun 17, 2008:
Goatfish comes very close. Barben = mullets. Outside Europe, the Mullidae are often called "goatfish". Here's an example: http://www.fishbase.org/summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=10994

Yellowfin goatfish

"Mulloidichthys vanicolensis" is the Latin name according to a "Maxi Memofish" waterproof card I have which includes pictures of 260 species of Red Sea fish, corals, invertebrates, etc.
See the wikipedia link here for more details and a picture of a shoal of "Gelbstreifenbarben". The photo appears to match the colour drawing on my chart.
Thanks to Nicole for pointing me straight to the goatfish.

Gold barb

As an aquarist, many years ago, I know there are many different varieties of barbs. The closest to yours I would say is the gold barb (Puntius semifasciolatus). Particularly as the text has them shoaling.
Hope this helps.
