I don't want to say 'appears to be spaced out' or 'staring into space', but can't find a suitable way to say it. Suggestions will be appreciated!

sorry, the ONLY/LAST sense left before losing consciousness is hearing. This sounds very similar to a minor seizure.

the way I see it is that the sense left to him is the sense of hearing. They say that hearing is the last sense to remain when all else is lost immediately before death. Presumably this also occurs before losing consciousness - as in a seizure or hallucin

Carol -your comment could fit my idea of 'gazing unseeingly, as if listening intently'. We can all picture his expression - it's the wording that's hard!

From this context alone, are you sure the patient was concentrating on listening, and not just "as though able only to hear"?
It'd just that, on its own (w/o more context) "concentrating on listening" seems a little odd... though not impossible!

The reason I would prefer not to use "staring into space", is because is that I feel it means being 'in a daze' or 'lost in space'. The patient appeared to be concentrating on listening and was oblivious to the rest of his surroundings... It's that particular look one has when listening intently...

As this is a psychology question, I was going to suggest "staring into

the void", but this doesn't apply here (that's more Philosophy!)

What I used to do in English class...:-)

A suggestion - an expression which avoids the spaced out connotations, as you request. Per se staring into space doesn't actually carry this connotation, imo, but in this context I agree that it may best to avoid the expression!

This wording, adding the word 'off', is the best way I can think of to indicate that a person's attention is absent, or focused away from reality.

The complete translation would be: "the patient appears to be staring off into space"
