Kundennähe des Leistungsangebots

German to English Bus/Financial Marketing
From a case study in a Business text book relating to the activities of the field sales force of a fictional company:

"Eine Kundenumfrage hat gezeigt, dass die Qualität der Dimension "Kundennähe des Leistungsangebotes" verbesserungswürdig ist" .

Doe this mean literally the "proximity" of the services to the customer, or the "relevance" of the services.. or something else?

John, is it also your understanding that the term “Kundennähe des Leistungsangebotes” is how the question was actually phrased in the survey? If this is the wording that was used, then the English translation needs to be as unambiguous as possible.

Since the services are, by definition, all provided directly on location, the word "Kundennähe" does not appear to mean "customer proximity" here, which is another common translation for this German buzz word. (A common example of “customer proximity” would be an automotive supplier that is located directly adjacent to a car assembly plant.)

As other answerers have pointed out, the use of Kundennähe here conveys the idea of meeting customers' needs, focusing on customers' needs, being in tune with customers' needs, targeting customers' needs, etc.

Whatever solution you choose, I’d strongly recommend that you verbalize the structure.

I would go with local presence for Kundennaehe. Customer accessibility could also work, but I think local presence is more elegant.

customer focus

A customer survey showed that the quality of the "customer focus of services offered" dimension is in need of improvement.

I realize that "customer focus of services offered" is quite clumsy and in need of improvement, but I think it's in the right direction.

or "take a more client-centric" approach...

Agree with earlier comments that the notion relates to "bonding", "relationships", etc., and as such expresses an emotive element -- not physical proximity.

neutral Paul Cohen : A great buzz word, Rob! I like it. The only question is whether a customer survey would use this kind of jargon. Would the firm ask its customers to rate the "client centricity of its range of services"? That kind of lingo might alienate some folks, oder?

I agree that a customer survey would not use this jargon, but an internal marketing unit certainly would, as would a case study in a business text book. I'm the first guy to roll my eyes at "going forward" and "incentivize" too, believe me.
