Prudently....
This is the adverbial form of the noun "prudence" which is defined as "caution or circumspection as to danger or risk". Prudently is defined as "marked by circumspection....discreet".

I also like "to be on the safe side," but to my ear, "taking precautions" better captures the ominous sense of anticipating trouble.
