bridging study - a study **designed to extend the applicability of a confirmatory study**, usually to broaden the population to which the results apply. Bridging studies are usually much smaller than other confirmatory studies
confirmatory study - a study that is designed to answer a specific question without leaving any room for doubt. Whilst Phase I studies and Phase II studies give some information regarding efficacy and safety, Phase III studies are usually thought of as being confirmatory.
