relatos de la hora

I will post this as two questions, but I'm really struggling with the entire phrase between asterisks below:
Los modistos, que ya existían aunque sin los beneficios hoy ostensibles de la actividad, aprovechaban para promover sus creaciones los desfiles militares o los paseos por las plazas mayores o los óleos o los grabados o los ***relatos de la hora donde la falta de noticias históricas*** hacen brotar los chismes.

Hi Patricia, "daily chats" sounds more fluent maybe - (still, it depends on the overall tone you're using).
Thank you. Saludos.

Note from asker:
Thanks, Patricia. I think this chapter is actually going to be a prologue or epilogue, and it is much less formal (although it is still pretty elegant in tone) than the others. So, I've gone with: Without the advertising options that are so visible in this profession today, the fashion designers took the opportunity to promote their creations during military parades or outings in the main plazas, or in oil paintings or etchings, or even in daily chats, when the lack of trustworthy news led to an eruption of rumors and gossip. |

Comment: "Thank you, Patricia! Which is better? "The talk of the day" or "in their daily talks (chats?)""

discussion of current events
OR:
"discussion of the current happenings"
"discussion of important goings-on"
etc.
"Current talk" conveys the idea, but does not work within the context of this sentence.
The whole thing, then, would be:
los relatos de la hora donde la falta de noticias históricas hacen brotar los chismes.
=
discussion of current events in a society in which an absence of trustworthy news invariably led to rumors and gossip
=
los relatos de la hora donde la falta de noticias históricas hacen brotar los chismes.
Suerte.
