... and now comes "пораженность". I found the term "attack rate," but am not sure about it. In the KudoZ glossary I found "chronic affection," which sounds bizarre to me because of the primary meaning of "affection" (любовь, расположение), but perhaps that is blinding me to a technical term - "affection" as the state of being affected by something.

Comment: "So far, I'm not ready to use any of the suggested terms, which is why this isn't going into the glossary, but KudoZ is on my case to do something. Judith's suggestion is the only one I see which both 1) works with "населения", and 2) is not simply a different way of saying prevalence or incidence - although it seems pretty doggone close to prevalence. Since my author takes almost all his terms from English writings on epidemiology, I do think there's a different English technical term lurking somewhere, and that it's possibly "attack rate," although that is apparently used for a subpopulation, not for "the" population. Ultimately, I may be able to find out from the author what is intended, but that will happen weeks from now."

Prevalence and incidence are used for whatever desease. As HIV is an infectious disease, "infection rate" reflects its nature. This term is often used for TB, HIV and other contagious diseases. Though any of the aforementioned terms may be used. Prevalence is IMHO the best term for wide spread occurrence. The most usual and neutral term is incidence.
