Discussion

Rafal Piotrowski Apr 5, 2010:
@Henry - Point taken; in such contexts, I prefer using "register", as I mainly speak and write in British English :-)
Henry Hinds Apr 4, 2010:
Register/Registry Perhaps "registry" is my USA prejudice, but it is certainly not incorrect.
Rafal Piotrowski Apr 4, 2010:
Another point: IMVHO "Trade Register" IS indeed a perfect, commonly used English cliché (that's why I agreed with you). "Register of Commerce/Commerce Register" sounds to me more pompous, more clerk-like. And, BTW, has over 7 million hits on Google :-)

Now, it's up to the Asker to choose between "trade/commerce" and "entrepreneurs" (before "register" - not regisTRY, naturally).

And that's it :-)

All the best,

R.P.

Margaret - I'm not trying to demonstrate my "over-sensitiveness", or prove myself huffy. Also, I'm not questioning your suggestions, which sound very fair to me (after all, YOU'RE the native speaker :-))

Please, pay more attention at my emoticons. Smiles and the like.

Peace,

R.
margaret caulfield Apr 4, 2010:
Rafal, I don't why you seem to think that I thought you had "opposed" anywhere. I just wanted to point out that I had a very solid reason for offering "Trade Registry", which is what I always use in my own translations. Please don't be so oversensitive, Rafal.
Rafal Piotrowski Apr 4, 2010:
Margaret: Do I oppose anywhere?... ;-)

Often, our work is a matter of stylistic choices; some clichés prevail, some are in minority. Your interpretation is closer to the original; very true. And the decision whether to choose between "trade" and "commerce" lies solely with the Asker. Unless he/she follows my option :-)

Best,

Rafal

Rafal, Please see my links below on "Trade Register".
Rafal Piotrowski Apr 4, 2010:
I think you've been given two fairly good suggestions; now your choice depends on what kind of register is used in the "target" country. Sometimes it's about "commerce", sometimes about "entrepreneurs"; the latter is the option in Poland, for this instance :-) No such thing as trade/commerce registry.

and registered in the Trade Register

My version here, even though the word "register" is almost repeated.

agree Rafal Piotrowski : Like this one, too; I'd opt for "Register of Commerce", though :-)

Gracias, imatahan.
neutral philgoddard : I don't think "registered in the register" works - it's repetition.

Right! As I myself already said, in spite of the repetition, I think it's correct. This is not a literary translation.

and duly registered in the Business Registry Office

registro
masculine noun1. registry (office) (oficina)
•registro civil -> registry (office) •registro de comercio o mercantil -> business registry office •registro de la propiedad -> land registry office •registro de la propiedad industrial/intelectual -> trademark/copyright registry office

Good luck!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Rafal Piotrowski : I'd be cautious when using "registrY" versus "registER". The two have quite different connotations in English, to the best of my knowledge. Sorry...// Quite right, mate. English IS full of traps. That's how we make our living, ne c'est pas? ;-)

Never mind Rafal. You are fully entitled to give your opinion whatever it might be. This is how we use it in Venezuela. As you said it yourself, the asker has the last word.
