"knowing eyes" is good, idiomatic English. The thing is that it can have different meanings. It can refer to eyes that express understanding or eyes that are perceptive, i.e., an ability to see things that other eyes miss.
It wasn’t lost on knowing eyes in Sunday’s race when, at the exact point Ryan went down, Meb crossed himself and moments later tried vainly to wipe the tears from his eyes in order to again focus on the goal before him." http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_162271.asp

Note from asker:
Thank you, Judith. Question: Does the syntax of English allow for 'eyes' to be 'knowing'? I wasn't sure... I know in Russian such combination is valid, but in English it sounds a bit odd, don't you think? Nothing personal, I think your answer is the best one; it's just that the syntax of different languages may not allow for certain combinations that are valid in the original language. |

Кстати, поскольку это всё-таки сайт переводчиков. Предлагаю свой вариант "hearing soul and talking eyes".

a friendly face
I don't know whether or not this fits your context perfectly, but it is a very common expression: "I (just) needed to see a friendly face", (or, on the telephone you might say "hear a friendly voice") meaning that one feels sad or lonely and wishes to speak to a familiar person who will understand their feelings.

Thank you for the comment. Naturally my idea is not a literal translation (other people have already provided that); I just wanted to mention this expression which can sometimes be useful.

Note from asker:
Sure, Alexandra. Thank for your input. The question at hand is whether one can attribute such descriptive characteristics as 'intelligent,' or 'knowing' to 'eyes' in English? In Russian, it's very common, but it sounds a bit odd in English. Read my note to Judith. |
