especies agrosilvo pastoriles: grazed woodland species Explanation: grazed woodland means woodland where animals are allowed to graze. Since these are "bosques protegidos" the number of animals would be controlled and if some of the woodland has been replanted and is immature, the trees would be allowed to reach a good size before the animals were allowed in to graze, to prevent the animals from damaging young trees. |

Silvopasture species Explanation: Silvopasture is also known as silvopastoralism and silvopastural agroforestry Silvopasture is the practice of combining forestry and grazing of domesticated animals in a mutually beneficial way. Advantages of a properly managed silvopasture operation are enhanced soil protection and increased long-term income due to the simultaneous production of trees and grazing animals. Perhaps the oldest agroforestry system used in the temperate regions of the world, silvopastoral systems are characterized by integrating trees with forage and livestock production. Such systems have the potential to reduce agricultural production in the long term. Silvopastoral systems are definitely the most prominent agroforestry practice in the United States, particularly in the southeast. In the UK, there is a nationwide experiment for silvopastoral systems in which a number of tree species and planting densities are being studied over a range of sites. It is called The Silvopastoral National Network Experiment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silvopasture One type of agroforestry is silvopastoralism, which focuses on the production of livestock and tree products in one integrated pasture system. Silvopasture is big business in the Southeast of the United States where it is economical to run a single species, cattle, under a pine monoculture in a large silvopastoral operation. However, on small farms, especially in the tropics, diversification through managing a variety of both animal and plant species is the most efficient utilization of the resource, and provides a variety of products, thus providing a hedge against risk. http://forest.mtu.edu/pcforestry/resources/studentprojects/s... Tree species should be used from an approved list for silvopasture species. Native trees should be favored where ever possible. http://www.mo.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/forestry/silvopasture1... |
