Hi Wendy Pectoral muscle is one meaning of "pectoral" and this is another. I've added a note to try to clarify this.

But pectoral is a muscle in the chest. I am not seeing many convincing hits for pectoral as an ornamental object...how about chest ornaments or decorative object worn around the chest??

"Pectoral" alone really is OK for this; I have cited a couple of references and the are very many more. Here are Google results from a search for pectoral precolumbian:

There are thousands: gold pectorals, stone pectorals, mirror pectorals, and so on. Amerindian pectorals can be plaques, but not all are.
But if you prefer, I think it would be OK to use "pectoral ornament".

In the Christian church, by the way, a pectoral cross or pectorale is a standard item, worn by clergy of various denominations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pectoral_cross
