BTW, there are loads of hits for "haemodialysis technician" so as for "small number of hits", I am sceptical.

@ Muriel. It is not always advisable to go on the number of hits on the internet, particularly as both "haemodialysis technician" and "dialysis technician" exist, as independent terms. Also, both "Hemodiálise" and "Diálise" exist in Portuguese. They are not synonyms. As for theories of terminology, I don't know of any. I am a linguist and a medical translator, this is all I know.

@Liz I understand your point. I wasn't the one who said it was a 'false friend'. Obviously, h(a)emodialysis is more precise. I was simply concerned about the small number of hits on the Internet. As we have discussed off-line in the past, according to theory of terminology, one is always supposed to choose the term that is most widely used - allowing, of course, for differences in register. Widespread use trumps all other criteria - this comes from the ISO's committee on terminology. The idea is to avoid competing terms, which leads to confusion and inaccuracy. Context is important here. H(a)emodialysis is by far the most common of the three procedures. A technician will use that procedure most often, or exclusively, in his/her practice, though they are most likely trained to perform all three.

Dialysis Technician

485,000 hits. Very few hits for phrases with "hemodialysis"; not many for "hemodialysis attendant"- but a huge resposne for "dialysis technician". Hemodialysis is far more common than peritoneal dialysis, so I guess that 'hemo-' is assumed.
