As discussed, this seems to be a typo in the original, and per the context, he is referring to the term coined by French Philosopher Henry Bergson. "Vital impetus", "vital force" "current of life" would explain the term, I'd go as far as referring to it as "spiritual drive" (?) or "energy of life". Random House gives,

[1875–80; F, MF eslan a dash, rush, n. deriv. of eslancer to dart, equiv. to es- EX-1 + lancer to LANCE1] In the context provided, one could say that that "élan" it's almost "his modus operandi", his "style", in other words, his "spirit" or "breath of creativity permeating all his works"... to put it in a simple manner...
