2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks for the comments. I also considered that Arts are one thing, and Humanities are something else. In my country, The Faculty of Arts delas with plastic subjects, and Letters deal with linguistics, Language History, Contemporan Language, all language subjects (grammar, semnatics) and Literature. Again, many thanks!"

Jane: \"College\" in the US is generally used as a synonym for university, and the university (université) is divided into departments (facultés), which are called faculties in the UK. Who ever heard of a subdivision of a univeristy being called a \"college\" in the US?
Peer comment(s):

disagree nizar kallal : Humanities refer to 'sciences humaines' lettres' refers to 'arts'. Faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines becomes 'Faculty of Arts and Humanities'. It's the translation we use here in Tunisia.

That's based on the British translation. In the US, "Humanities" includes literature and Arts refers only to the plastic arts (painting, etc.)
agree sarahl (X) : agree 100% (I went to college in both countries)

Me too, from Indiana to Paris VII
disagree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : NOT a department; a college

On what planet is that? It's either "faculty" in the UK or "department" in the US.
neutral writeaway : lots of US universities have colleges: NYU , BU, Tufts, Columbia College and Barnard College at Columbia University, etc. etc. admittedly no colleges at U of Indiana...but there are at U of Arizona, U of Iowa etc.

Liberal Arts College

In the U.S., the equivalent institution is a liberal arts college or a regular university (in the humanities department).

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 2003-08-15 14:22:52 (GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

if you wanted to major in literature in the United States you would go to a REGULAR university or a liberal arts college (I think those terms are often synonymous) and choose a major in that area, but you would still be required to take courses in other subjects (i.e. \"distribution requirements\").

The \"liberal arts\" refers to academic disciplines such as languages, literature, history, philosophy, mathematics, and science, that provide information of general cultural concern.

So basically my point is: there is no such thing as a university that just offers education in literature. I think the philosophy here is that you should have a smattering of everything in college (since high schools failed to do that!). I went to a \"liberal arts college\", also known as Stanford University, and majored in Biology but also took literature, philosophy, mathematics, and history.
Peer comment(s):

agree roneill : This is certainly true for the U.S

thanks, I should have also explained in my example that Stanford has a liberal arts college (which is what I attended) but also a law school, business school, etc., which is why it is referred to as a "University" instead of a "college".
