Portuguese term

cegaram

Portuguese to English Other History Academic article
Hi everyone! I'm translating an academic article entitled CULTURA JURÍDICA E CULTURA RELIGIOSA: ENTRE A LEI E A RELIGIÃO

This term is in the final paragraph of the article. I'd like to know what exactly 'cegaram' means here - if it's 'blinded' or more in the sense of 'blinded themselves to', or if there's a better verb altogether. Thanks!

I checked and the client meant 'blinded', in the sense of 'the lights of...blinded', like Bryan has said below.

And.... ....what WAS the answer found elsewhere?

blinded

The literal translation is that "the lights of the Enlightenment blinded the hegemonic interpretations..." - essentially, that when the hegemony's ability to form sound interpretations was impacted negatively by the "lights of the Enlightenment".
