French term

être anxiogène

Non-PRO French to English Other Journalism
Context: from an article discussing cultural insecurity following the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris of 2015

Discussion

Tony M Mar 8, 2015:
@ Asker I note that another Asker is requesting help with extracts from this same article; in their case, they have very properly declared this as being taken from a test or homework, as required under KudoZ asking rules.
Please could you confirm if your questions too are from some kind of test or homework? If so, they ought to have been flagged up as such.

stressful, anxiety-ridden

anxiogène means something that creates anxiety
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jennifer Levey : Your own explanation explains why "stressful" and "anxiety-ridden" (both adjectives) cannot be correct.

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : "Stressful" describes something which expresses stress (a physiological reaction). Something which is "anxiety-ridden" is full of anxiety (a mental state). Unfortunately neither describes something "anxiogène", which causes anxiety.

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Yes, "-gène" = causes or another synonym thereof. Has to be anxiety though, as stress is a physical symptom caused by anxiety (a mental state). To that extent, "stress" is a mistranslation.

agree writeaway : http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/journalism/57976... Sounds like a student or 2 has found a great way to get through a homework assignment they can't do.
