German term

Digitalien

German to English Marketing Tourism & Travel Work & Vacation/workspaces at vacation sites
Greetings esteemed Colleagues!
This is an interesting concept. A finca on Mallorca provides workspace for a variety of professions, particularly those who work exclusively with Internet, smartphones and computer/laptop. You rent a desk on a daily, weekly or monthly basis; have powerful Internet access, coffee, tea, lounge, conference room, etc. It is not a hotel, so you have to live somewhere else - not really an option for those of us squeezing by, but anyway... this term coes up twice in the text I'm translating and I liken it to 'paraphenalia.' As it appears to be a new creation - not in my dics or KOG - I'd like your assistance in finding a good translation. Digitalia? That's the best I can do, but it sounds like a disease, or slightly pornographic, or like digitalis...

Digitalien liegt heute auch am Mittelmeer! (There is no other context beyond what I descirbed above)
Digitalia surfs the Mediterranean!

My translation: 'We don't print everything'

Let's go! (please)

Discussion

Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) Jun 1, 2015:
Good morning Alison! It seemed the most conclusive translation (at the time). Besides, why waste paper? Have a good Monday, and if it's blue, it does NOT define the rest of the week!
Alison MacG Jun 1, 2015:
@ Ramey An afterthought re your first sentence Wir drucken Digitalien nicht aus - I think you are correct with 'We don't print everything' and that they mean we don't print the whole 'digital world', as here:

Don't Print The Entire Internet!
This is actually a rule pinned up on the wall of UCL cluster rooms...

Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) Jun 1, 2015:
Hi Elli It is, isn't it? That was another fun project, I love my job!
Eleanore Strauss Jun 1, 2015:
Digital nomad is a nice idea! But digitalia is an awful-sounding word. :)
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 30, 2015:
That bad?
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 30, 2015:
Solved and sent I've settled on:
The Mediterranean is your new digital nomad domain!
I hope you approve...
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 30, 2015:
How about 1. Digital nomads have (finally) found their oasis - on the Mediterranean! /have settled...
2. Digital nomads are destined for the Mediterranean!
1,298. The Mediterranean is destined to be the new digital nomad domain
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 30, 2015:
@Wendy I've completely circumvented Digitalien in the first case. In the second case, the sound of Digitalia sends shudders down my spine...I'm now working with 'The digital world/community orbits the Mediterranean/has moved to/sets anchor in...
Oh bother!
Wendy Streitparth May 29, 2015:
Would just "Digital printouts" be enough for the second "Digitalien"? The explanation follows beneath the heading.
Wendy Streitparth May 29, 2015:
I like the sound of your "Digitalia surfs the Mediterranean"!
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 29, 2015:
@Phil How about turning that around? Digital has gone Mediterranean!
Eleanore Strauss May 29, 2015:
Very interesting conundrum I thought of Balkonien as well...and of course the allusion to Italy (but I always think of Italy). In this case, I would suggest something like your digital place in the sun.
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 29, 2015:
@Berit I understood that Digitalien is like a place, a world. Or did you mean more like a state of mind?
Berit Kostka, PhD May 29, 2015:
@Ramey I think you misunderstood. Either way, for what it's worth:

Go digital on the Med!
franglish May 29, 2015:
hmm... Your digital door overlooking the Mediterranean?
philgoddard May 29, 2015:
Maybe "The Mediterranean has gone digital".
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 29, 2015:
Dig It All of you Well, I dig Italia, too
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 29, 2015:
Digitalland sounds like a Disney attraction.
@Phil how can it be well written, when it's undefined?
@Berit what a load to carry! The others are really not very inspiring, are they?
Berit Kostka, PhD May 29, 2015:
@Phil Actually it seems Digitalien is a relatively common word now in German. I have never heard it before, but from googling it there seems to be quite some use for it recently...
Berit Kostka, PhD May 29, 2015:
@Ramey This is your chance to add a new word to the English dictionary!
philgoddard May 29, 2015:
I think the meaning is "even the Mediterranean is digital", but I'm sure it could be better expressed than that. And maybe the only reason why we're discussing its meaning is because it's not very well written in German.
Berit Kostka, PhD May 29, 2015:
@mill2 Yes, me neither! And think about those ones: Realien or Analogistan :o)
mill2 May 29, 2015:
@Berit I agree with the Balkonien allusion. Unfortunately I can't think of a good English equivalent!
BrigitteHilgner May 29, 2015:
Dear Ramey, Think positive: if they are on Mallorca, we should be able to avoid them!
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 29, 2015:
@Berit & Brigitte HORRORS, really?? A virtual world? Poor Earth
Berit Kostka, PhD May 29, 2015:
Ramey Unfortunately I don't have enough time today to dive into this enough, but I have a feeling that in this case Digitalien means something like Balkonien, if you know what I mean. So it is actually meant to be a "destination" and a word creation that describes the digital work place.

As for the second time the term occurs, I agree with Phil.
BrigitteHilgner May 29, 2015:
digital countries, digital world, digital life ... on the Mediterranean Sea
Just an idea from the world of clinical trials.
Ramey Rieger (X) (asker) May 29, 2015:
Hi Phil Yes, I thought as much and will stick to my translation in keeping with the casual tone. As for the other term:
http://www.rayaworx.eu/
philgoddard May 29, 2015:
Ramey The translation of the second instance is obviously "digital documents".
As for the first, I think it would be helpful to give a link to the German, which is available online. I haven't come up with an answer yet, but it makes more sense to see it in context.

digital nomad destination

A suggestion for this particular instance - the latest digital nomad destination

As Berit says, Digitalien is a destination.

Das Suffix bezeichnet ein Land, das durch die in der Basis genannten Eigenschaft näher bestimmt wird: Digitalien ist ein Land, in dem es digital zugeht.
http://hypermedia.ids-mannheim.de/call/public/gramwb.ansicht...

So in this case:
Wenn Smartphone und Laptop reichen, um per Internet der beruflichen Aufgaben nachzukommen – warum nicht mal von Mallorca arbeiten? Digitalien liegt heute auch am Mittelmeer!

you could perhaps say: The Mediterranean is the latest digital nomad destination.

Another option is:

The Mediterranean is the place to be for digital nomads.

My inspiration came from things like this:

The life of a digital nomad
As a matter of fact, the island has become THE place to be for digital nomads.
http://www.theafactor.org/life-digital-nomad/

Trending Places for Digital Nomads Around the World
Top Digital Nomad Destinations

The World’s Top Digital Nomad Destinations
http://www.movehub.com/blog/digital-nomad

In some cases, you may well simply have to use digital world.

Good luck with the Meer/mehr wordplay if you are translating the entire site!
[Kontakt für Meer
Digitalien ist eine Insel im Mittelmeer]

Co-Working in the Med

From what you're described Ramey, this is exactly what I want to do In Liverpool, renting a desk monthly etc. I can't think of a specific term relating to digitalien at the moment, but I believe this is the concept we are referring to.
You get some mad projects!
Note from asker:
Thank you Matthew. Yes, I get the fun stuff! And yes, it is a co-working space and co-working turns up often, which is why I can't use it here. But thank you!
