Spanish term

complementación terapéutica

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
This is a list of services provided by a hospital/health board.

The full name/heading of the service group is "apoyo diagnóstico y complementación terapéutica".

The sub-headings/services provided in this group include a variety of things, such as clinical biochemistry, chemotherapy, radiology and diagnostic imaging, occupational therapy, cervical cancerl screeing, the list goes on...

I have found this as a compete term on several Spanish-language sites, so I think it is a standard/commonly used term but I can´t think what the equivalent would be in English.

Diagnostics/diagnostic support and ??

Thanks in advance.

therapeutic support

It doesn't mean complementary therapy. As Jane says, it includes things such as clinical biochemistry, chemotherapy, radiology and diagnostic imaging.

My reference shows some of the other things it covers.

Since "apoyo" and "complementación" basically mean the same thing, I suggest translating "apoyo diagnóstico y complementación terapéutica" as something like "diagnostic and therapeutic support services". Or you could replace "therapeutic" with "treatment".

Note from asker:
Thank you Phil. In the end I went with "diagnostic support and additional services" which was maybe a bit on the broad side. I´ll keep this suggestion in mind for the future.

agree Emma Goldsmith : I agree, Phil, except I'd use "diagnostic and treatment support" for the UK.

Yes, I did suggest that as an alternative, and it's probably better. And "therapy" is more concise than "therapeutic".
agree liz askew : http://www.ipsuniversitaria.com.co/index.php?option=com_cont... in the sense of "additional"

complementary therapies

Hi, Dr Marshall,
Because of the Spanish word order, it seems as if it should be "therapeutic/therapy complements", but that or other similar alternatives are just not used often in English.
This is what I'd put; it seems to fit with the items in your sub-headings.

http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cancers-in-gene...
A complementary therapy means you can use it alongside your conventional medical treatment. It may help you to feel better and cope better with your cancer and treatment. It is important to discuss with your doctor any complementary therapy that you are thinking of using.
An alternative therapy is generally used instead of conventional medical treatment. All conventional cancer treatments have to go through rigorous testing by law in order to prove that they work. Most alternative therapies have not been through such testing and there is no scientific evidence that they work. Some types of alternative therapy may not be completely safe and could cause harmful side effects.

Unfortunately, a lot of sites use "complementary therapies" as a synonym for "alternative therapies", which would not be the meaning in your list.

Perhaps "adjuvant therapies" would be better.

Thanks, Muriel. An "agree" from you means a lot. :-)
neutral philgoddard : I disagree with both your suggestions. Complementary therapy implies alternative medicine. Adjuvant therapy is additional treatment to maximise the effectiveness of chemo- and radiotherapy. This is about things like sports medicine and screening services.

Thanks for your comments, Phil.
