I know that Diopters = Dioptres but to my knowledge this is a noun and yet you would think that in this sentence it is a measuring unit ..

Thanx for your help.

Helen Munduteguy (X) Dec 11, 2015:
dioptre or dioptrie? I think in French the surface is called "dioptre" but the unit used is "dioptrie".

Well, yes, it IS a noun — but it is the noun for a measurement unit!

Plenty of reference information online about it, but in essence, it's as straightforward as that!

Yes, in fact, Helen has pointed out my mistake: the actualy unit itself is indeed the 'dioptrie' — mea culpa!
Note from asker:
Thank you for this. Actually when I wrote "noun" I did not put the whole info. This is the definition of dioptre in the dictionnary: (optique) surface entre des milieux transparents d'indices de réfraction distincts Therefore I did not take it as a measurement unit. Thank you for your help.

Thanks, J! Though as Helen points out, it ought to be 'dioptrie'!

Thanks, B! :-) But as Helen and now PLR have said, it is in fact 'dioptries'
neutral Daryo : strictly speaking the unit for measuring the "strength of lenses" or iow the focal distance is "dioptrie"

Yes, Daryo, I think that has already been pointed out ;-)
