I would like to take advantage of your collective knowledge to clarify this concept as well as to translate it. It crops up quite frequently to describe increases in amounts such as:
"en los últimos meses continuó verificándose una clara expansión relativa de las transferencias bancarias inmediatas en el margen, tanto en términos de cantidades como de valores" or "Todos los grupos de bancos redujeron la concentración de sus depósitos en el margen"
It is not the obvious meanings of "an increase in profit margin" for example, or "margin requirements"
I can't see what it adds to the statement, and I can't go in blithely translating it as "in the margin" without at least knowing what it means.

Not too sure of your context here Pat, and I don't claim to fully understand how the term is used correctly, but this would seem a sensible fit here. Apparently, banks and other financial institutions transfer funds, securities, etc., as collateral to accounts called "margin accounts" for various purposes.
You might also want to try rearranging your target text to use "margin deposits" instead, as I feel a bit iffy about on/in/to the margin, after having researched those combinations.

and indeed it could be, but I don't think that's the case. It seems much more likely to be talking about "margin deposits" in my view, especially since it mentions "concentración de sus depósitos".
Syntactically, at least, it doesn't appear to mean "marginally", since that would be "al margen", and it would need some kind of comparative, wouldn't it? For example "al margen [de algo]".
Again, here's what the DRAE has:

1. loc. adv. U. para indicar que alguien o algo no tiene intervención en el asunto de que se trata. Dejar, estar, quedar al margen DE un asunto.
Not at all sure about this one, but I'm still inclined to go with my original answer, as it at least has some grounding in the original text as well as banking practices, so they couldn't really fault you for using it.
