Discussion
Ti start with, what is this "it" that displayed them? The huge number of images involved seems to me to suggest this could not be a simple document for example, and I wonder if even anything like a PPT presentation could quite handle so much information — and the usefulness of doing so!
I have an inkling that 'referenced in' here specifically means 'references were given to all these images' — e.g. hyperlinks, etc. so that people would have to go and find them if they wanted to see them.
I have a feeliong this is not about 'referring to' things, nor yet about 'using them as references'; note the use of the specific verb 'referenced', which can have different meanings depending on whether we are talking in purely IT terms, or more generally.
I think before even attemmpting to answer this question, some clarification as to the exact meaning of the source text here would be immensely useful!
