Russian term

направления

Russian to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
I am a bit perplexed about the meaning of the word "направления" in the given context. It is a description of a business model used to determine priorities for various products. Thanks for your help!

Discussion

Nina Chulak (asker) Apr 14, 2018:
I think you're missing the point as well. The text in the parentheses (by default) is obviously an explanation of the text before. I translated word for word to show that the meaning of your suggested answer for the word in question is wrong. I agree with Oleg that "napravleniya" here means activities of the business, not businesses. I asked for translation of just that one word after all.
The Misha Apr 13, 2018:
You are totally missing my point here, I am afraid You are translating words, so, naturally, what your are getting is "All products (projects, businesses?) of the enterprise are separated into... " which makes for horrible non-native English coming from a legitimate native speaker of English, of all others. You claim to be a writer, right? So think like one and phrase this the way an English speaker writing in English would phrase it using the legitimate English terms from the horse's mouth, so to speak, i.e. the verbiage normally used to describe that damn Boston thing. This way, you easily come up with something to the tune of all businesses, product lines, hot pirozhkis and what not being classified into or qualified/described as blah blah. Besides, a predpriyatiye IS a business in natural English. This is not a shag vpravo, shag vlevo, rasstrel na meste situation. This is not even rocket science or a transcript of a deposition. This is business writing. It need not be translated verbatim. It needs to be palatable - or no one will bother reading it.

I really don't know how to explain it any better. Like I said, do as you see fit.
Nina Chulak (asker) Apr 13, 2018:
The Misha, I appreciate your response. However, in the given sentence "businesses" does not fit. Все товары (проекты, направления) предприятия подразделяются на...
All products (projects, businesses?) of the enterprise are separated into...
Businesses of an enterprise? No, I don't think so. But again, thanks.
The Misha Apr 13, 2018:
"By default"? The sentence you posted here clearly indicates this is about the Boston Consulting Group's classification of business, product lines, etc. that no business school book fails to mention, whether deservedly or not. So what your translation should say is that all products, projects or businesses may be classified into blah blah blah, or something similar - because what you are doing here is essentially back-translating the poorly rehashed Russian translation of the original verbiage, and in such cases (unlike when back-translating drug approval paperwork) the original terminology always governs. I mean, that is if you want your end product to sound anywhere near half-competent on the subject matter it deals with.

I am not so sure about the other question, I've only seen that one single sentence. That said, don't let anything I say stop you and by all means do as you see fit. What do I care?

Good luck with your project.

Businesses or business units

Look here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Growth–share_matrix

This is apparently related to the well-known BCG classification of businesses, products, etc. I guess it should also answer your other question about the name. No one really cares what that thing is called, but everyone remembers "stars," "dogs" and "cash cows". Me, I have very tender feelings for all those underappreciated cows:)
Note from asker:
My other question is regarding a completely different model, unrelated to this question. Also, it cannot be "businesses or business units" by default in the given context. Please see the sentence: Все товары (проекты, направления) предприятия подразделяются на... Thanks anyway for your reply.

disagree The Misha : "Directions" is what you ask for when you get lost:). Besides, this is about a very specific thing from a well known BCG classification.

profit centers

Profit center - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profit_center
== BEGIN QUOTE ==

A profit center is a section of a company treated as a separate business. Thus profits or losses for a profit center are calculated separately.

A profit center manager is held accountable for both revenues, and costs (expenses), and therefore, profits. What this means in terms of managerial responsibilities is that the manager has to drive the sales revenue generating activities which leads to cash inflows and at the same time control the cost (cash outflows) causing activities. This makes the profit center management more challenging than cost center management. Profit center management is equivalent to running an independent business because a profit center business unit or department is treated as a distinct entity enabling revenues and expenses to be determined and its profitability to be measured.

Business organizations may be organized in terms of profit centers where the profit center's revenues and expenses are held separate from the main company's in order to determine their profitability. Usually different profit centers are separated for accounting purposes so that the management can follow how much profit each center makes and compare their relative efficiency and profit. Examples of typical profit centers are a store, a sales organization and a consulting organization whose profitability can be measured.
