German term

Strahl

German to English Medical Medical (general) Surgery and treatment
In the context of the following sentence:

"Hier zeigte sich ein zusätzlicher Abszess im Bereich des 3. und 4. Strahles plantarseitig"

in a medical report for a patient suffering from an abscess in the arch of the foot, what does the word 'Strahl' refer to?
Could it be 'metatarsal' and, if so, why wouldn't the physician put that instead? Any suggestions?

Note from asker:
Thank you, David. That's very helpful, though I would have thought the word 'radius' or 'radii' or 'radial groove(s)' which you put in your answer would be more appropriate.
