Spanish term

BIS

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Anesthesiology report
This is from a hospital in Madrid, Spain (Hospital Universitario, Puerta de Hierro, Majadahonda).

The elderly patient was receiving an implant of a MitralClip when complications arose, so they were transferred to the cardiac surgery theatre. No idea what BIS, I'll post separate questions for "ARI", "VV", "VYED" and "VYI" (if needed). "ARI" could be "left radial artery", but the text already stated that the "RIGHT radial artery" had been cannulated.

INTRAOPERATIVE:
Balanced general anesthesia for EMERGENT mitral valve replacement + intra-aortic balloon pump ["AGM para RVMb +BIAoC EMERGENTE"]. Arrived intubated with vasoactive drugs at medium doses; standard monitoring + **** BIS + ARI, VV16G x2 + 18g + VYED 16G + VYI dcha.*****

It then uses a load more abbreviations to talk about the drugs administered.....
TIA.

Chema Nieto Castañón Feb 23, 2019:
BIS: monitor BIS (monitorización neurológica con Bispectral Index Signal)
ARI: arteria radial izquierda (canalizada arteria radial izquierda)
VV 16g x 2 + 18g: 2 accesos venosos periféricos de calibre 16 más un tercero de calibre 18
VYED 16g + VYI dcha: canalizada vena yugular externa derecha, calibre 16g + vena yugular interna derecha

Charles Davis Feb 22, 2019:
@Neil You have a point there. Not sure about ARI.
Neil Ashby (asker) Feb 22, 2019:
Would "angiografía con radioisótopos" make sense in this context for "ARI" - in a situation of relative urgency?
I'm finding some evidence of intraoperative angiography, so I guess it's a good possibility.
Neil Ashby (asker) Feb 22, 2019:
"ARI could be "Anestesia regional intravenosa" - not too sure about that one though, isn't it a technique used to numb a limb? Can it apply to the chest area?
Plus I've already assumed that "AGB" - anestesia general balanceada (sorry there's a mistake in my original question, I put "AGM"!)
Neil Ashby (asker) Feb 22, 2019:
Thanks Liz and Charles.

You know what these reports are like... not exactly flowing prose.
It's an anaesthesiology report about complications during a basic heart procedure. And it just jumps around willy nilly...
But thanks to you two I think I've got it now, this part at least.
Charles Davis Feb 22, 2019:
Further to the last point: if the veins mentioned after "ARI" are cardiological, what's the jugular doing there?
Charles Davis Feb 22, 2019:
@Neil There's no reason to assume that this particular part of your text is specifically cardiological. It's about intraoperative monitoring, and brain activity is relevant to that. And if I'm right about ARI (which I believe I am), the veins mentioned immediately after this are those through which intravenous anaesthesia is administered.

The examples I quoted of BIS with this meaning are in the context of heart surgery.
Neil Ashby (asker) Feb 22, 2019:
Thanks Liz,
Unfortunately the link gives a 404 error...

Anyway "índice biespectral".... I'll look into it. Thanks.

Seems to be related to brain activity, not sure it fits with cardiological problems in my text...

BIS (bispectral index)

"Bispectral index (BIS) is one of several technologies used to monitor depth of anesthesia."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bispectral_index

It's BIS rather than BSI in English, and the same acronym seems to be used in Spanish:

"Profundidad de la hipnosis
–BIS"
https://www.academia.cat/files/425-11098-DOCUMENT/Anestesiae... (p. 23).

This fits, I think, because it's just after a reference to monitoring.

And ARI could be Anestesia regional intravenosa, if it's talking about anaesthesia here.

"La tecnología Bis facilita el conocimiento de los efectos directos y específicos que la anestesia tiene en el cerebro de los pacientes. Procesa la información y calcula el número entre 0 y 100 que ofrece una medida directa del nivel de consciencia del paciente."

Note from asker:
That makes a lot of sense Charles, thanks for your explanation. I'm short on time to do much investigating - I saw something about "Profundidad de la hipnosis" and immediately dismissed it... didn't twig that it was about levels of anaesthesia. Doh!
