I feel average might convey the idea of "normal", "common" consistency, which (if this were the case) might be misleading here. I'd stick to medium consistency, as for soft, medium (neither soft nor hard; sometimes refered to as medium soft vs. medium hard) & hard consistency. I.e. No obstante, revisando la literatura especializada, la descripción de soft vs. firm fragments (of tissue) parece, de hecho, la habitual. Los ejemplos en este sentido (soft/firm fragments of tissue) son muy numerosos en la red. La clasificación de firm como consistencia intermedia (media; ni blanda ni dura) se encuentra también descrita así, específicamente. I.e.
(tumor) consistency; hard, soft or firm.

Así, de consistencia media (vs. blanda o -la nada habitual en este contexto- dura; soft and hard), sería el equivalente natural de firm. De hecho, en las traducciones inversas (eng>esp), firm consistency suele leerse, adecuadamente, como semidura (medium hard). Creo que la clasificación grosera de consistencia blanda, media y dura encuentra un equivalente natural en las descripciones habituales de soft, firm & hard en inglés, donde ocasionalmente esa consistencia media (firme, distinta de dura) puede encontrarse subdividida en medium soft y medium hard. En los reportes patológicos en inglés, no obstante, los descriptores que aparecen en relación a la consistencia son soft fragments & firm (fragments).
