Spanish term

un recodo tallado en madera

Spanish to English Art/Literary Ships, Sailing, Maritime Historical Romance
Contexto:

Mil Gracias,

Barbara

"Curve" Is Not A Synonym Of "Recess" https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/recess
Barbara Cochran, MFA (asker) Dec 17, 2019:
Actually, I decided to go with "nook" instead.
Marie Wilson Dec 17, 2019:
That's more or less what Phil said.

It's A Recess... ...cut onto the wood. Thanks, anyway.

After a search on viking boats:

"Early long boats used some form of steering oar but by the 10th century the side rudder (called a steerboard, the source for the etymology for the word starboard itself) was well established...Near the stern, about halfway down the starboard topsides, was a rounded wooden block about 150 mm (5.9 inches) in diameter and 100 mm (3.9 inches) high, with a central hole for a rope. This corresponded to a hole in the midsection of the rudder blade"
