It depends on the choices imbedded by the programmers of the game. You either have to update the game totally (the installed program) or partially (a part of it, like lists displays, or other options). Programmers often do that with language choices. You only have to add a patch, not to update the whole game.

. . . but I still don't see any reason why you can't update a league with the latest top players. You can update anybody with anything.

To update (some one or some entity) is to provide them with the latest information on a particular topic. In this case, you update the league by providing them with the names of "the latest top players."
