This movement of the traverse can be used to introduce yarn obliquely to the cutter roll.

So the position at which the yarn is [nb!] is paid out moves along the length of the boboin (traverses) — usually backwards and forwards, though other configurations are possible) as the yarn is unwound. Seems to correspond to illustration (a) in the image.
