инжирные ямы Explanation: Как человек, у которого в саду растёт 5 деревьев инжира, рискну предположить, что речь идёт о способе выращивания инжира. Не знаю, как правильно это назвать, но речь идёт о ямах, в которых выращивают инжир. Для понятия "выгребная яма" в английском языке есть много терминов, и ни один из них не содержит слово "fig". А информация от Наталии Гориной о том, что инжир уже 300 лет назад выращивали в штате Нью-Йорк, наводит на следующую гипотезу. В те времена ещё был малый ледниковый период. И несомненно, в штате Нью-Йорк инжир зимой вымерзал. Поэтому, вероятно, люди применили метод посадки в ямах (траншеях). При таком способе посадки инжир можно легко укрыть на зиму и таким образом защитить от мороза. Логично, что в период созревания инжира (ripe) в таких ямах скапливался аромат этих фруктов (fragrance ). Очень смущает слово "well-filled". Рискну предположить, что этим словом автор обозначил плотную посадку деревьев инжира в ямах. Сразу скажу - очень не уверен. И лучше бы этот вопрос задать в паре англ-англ. Жители штата Нбю-Йорк с большей вероятностью дадут ответ. |

Сомнительно, но как вариант, fig-pit — посадочная яма для инжира (фигового дерева). Инжир был завезен в Америку в конце XVI века, выращивается в Нью-Йорке, и вполне мог бы служить отличительной чертой упоминаемой местности. Тем более что «Belvedere... had grown up around a trading post». Fig Tree Growing Guide. Alternatively construct a fig pit.
